
According to the principle of the Life Cycle Analysis (EN ISO 14040), environmental impact must be reported to the service provided by the product, which is quantified as the "functional unit". For food, this unit must be set because expressing the carbon footprint as kg is currently not satisfactory. The Nutritional Functional Unit (NFU) intends to fulfill a need for clarification. The methodology for calculating the NFU, defined by the work of ADIV, is based on the SAIN.LIM nutrient profiling tool and allows quantifying the nutritional service provided by each food.
